New Governors Sought for Energy Coast UTC

Energy Coast UTC is a school based at Lillyhall, Workington, for 14-19 year old students who are interested in pursuing a career in engineering and construction.

Equipped with superb workshops, and rated “Good” by Ofsted this year, the UTC is supported by local and national companies such as Morgan Sindall Infrastructure, the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority and Sellafield Limited, and the nuclear supply chain, and is also supported by the University of Cumbria.  Students follow a curriculum which enables them to move on to apprenticeships at all levels, including degree apprenticeships. More than 80% of the young people who leave the UTC enter apprenticeships at all levels, including degree apprenticeships, against a national average of 7%.

We are looking to recruit new governors to the Full Governing Body. Governors offer strategic guidance, oversight and accountability rather than getting involved in the day to day operations of the school. Governors usually attend around 7 meetings a year, with meetings starting at 4.30 or 5.00 pm, and lasting for around 2 hours. The facility to join meetings by Teams or Zoom is available, although we hope governors will attend in person when possible. Governors are encouraged to get to know the school by making termly visits, and taking a particular interest in a subject or year group.

The  role also provides the opportunity for career development and the chance to support young people’s futures. In particular we need governors with a financial background.

We also need to recruit someone to take the Chair of the Governing Body in the next 12 months. Please see their website www.energycostutc.co.uk for more information about the school, particularly our Ofsted reports, and information about other governors. The current Chair, Barbara Stephens, would be delighted to meet interested people, and to discuss the role in more detail. Please contact her on utc@crook-hall.com.
