Your job in less than a minute

“I am a solicitor and director for Scott Duff & Co Solicitors, based in our Carlisle office and dealing with family law. I am responsible for the day-to-day running of the company and it’s 3 offices in Carlisle, Penrith and Keswick alongside 3 other directors, as well as running a case load of family law work, including divorce, financial issues, cohabitation and children matters.”

What is your connection to Cumbria?

“I was born and grew up in Carlisle. I moved away to Lancashire to complete my Law Degree and Post Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice before returning to my home town of Carlisle. Initially I worked for the Crown Prosecution Service before obtaining a Trainee Solicitor role at Scott Duff & Co in 2006, where I completed my training and qualified as a solicitor in 2008. I joined the board of directors for the firm in 2016.

I am a season ticket holder for Carlisle United and love living and working in such close proximity to the Lake District. “

Why join the Chamber’s board of directors?

As a Cumbrian, I believe that it is important to promote local business as much as possible. I also believe that small businesses such as mine deserve to have the same representation and say in matters as large and national companies. I hope to be able to offer a different perspective to the board on behalf of professional services and small local businesses, and that in turn, this will help other small businesses in our community.

What is your stand out/best quality when working?

I don’t like to use legal jargon and I believe many of my clients would say that my best quality is that I am down to earth and explain things in an understandable way, whilst also maintaining my professionalism at all times.

What is your biggest career highlight to date?

Becoming a director at the firm where I trained as a solicitor has been my biggest highlight. My mentor as a trainee and for a number of years afterwards was the founder of our firm, Andrew Duff, who sadly passed away in 2018. When he retired due to ill health, he was very proud of the firm he had created and that he felt he was leaving the firm in capable hands. I hope to carry on with the legacy he created and continue to build our firm and reputation until my own retirement.

A fun fact

I once paraglided off a 6500ft mountain!
