How employers can help shape the future and solve their own recruitment challenges at the same time

Did you know that young people experiencing 4 or more careers related engagement activities with employers during their journey through education are 86% less likely to be unemployed?

It shows how crucial it is to help young people transition from education to employment by assisting them to develop the insights, understanding and skills that will lead to them building a career and you can be a part of that whilst building your future talent pipeline.

The Cumbria Careers Hub was launched in January 2019 and aims to strengthen meaningful encounters between young people and employers in schools and colleges county-wide. Hosted by Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership (CLEP) and funded by the Department of Education and Cumbria LEP Hub it is the County’s lead organisation to support schools with delivering their careers education programme.  The network of business leaders drives partnerships between schools, colleges and the world of work, shaping young people’s futures, supporting school and college leaders in developing innovative, high-quality careers education at the heart of young people’s learning journeys.

It’s a win-win situation. By bringing the world of work into the classroom, employers who support the Careers Hub as Enterprise Advisors can help young people understand what fabulous education and career opportunities are out there in Cumbria and at the same time strengthen their own recruitment process for future vacancies.

Evidence suggests that high quality employment encounters have a real impact on the likelihood of a young person getting a job and the amount they earn. – it is also what young people say they want. Too often they are asked to think about careers without any real sense of what those entail.

The Future starts early

Schools now have a statutory requirement to deliver careers education to all students from Year 7 to Year 13 (6th form) and are constantly looking for employers to help deliver their careers education programmes.

Engaging with employers and experiencing workplaces is key in helping them find their best next step. There are many ways employers can support this process, by working with the Careers Hub and individual schools and colleges on a larger local and regional scale.

Real experience matters and sharing it with schools and colleges across Cumbria has never been more important. By joining the Enterprise Adviser Network businesses can give back to their local community, bridge the gap between the world of work and education, inspire young people, develop their own interpersonal and strategy skills and gain and identify new talent.

Christina Jones Performance Assurance Lead at Sellafield and Enterprise Adviser for Richard Rose Morton Academy in Carlisle said:

“For me, acting as an Enterprise Adviser offers me the opportunity to support schools develop, improve and evolve their career resources for their students.  Seeing such passion and pride from both the faculty and student body, and being part of that, is really rewarding.  It’s great to be able to give something back to the community.”

Sharing a career journey can be powerful. Insights, unique industry knowledge and experience can make a difference to the options a young person considers for their future.

The Hub is offering several ways to get involved, from giving as little as an hour sharing your career journey and insights with young people in schools and colleges, offering experiences of your workplace or supporting school leaders strategically with their careers programme by attending approximately 2 meetings a month as an Enterprise Adviser.

Could you be the role model who changes a young person’s life, just by showing what is possible? The Cumbria Careers Hub is currently looking for Enterprise Advisers to join the network in particular for the following schools:

  • Settlebeck School, Sedbergh
  • Cartmel Priory, Cartmel
  • Dallam School, Milnthorpe
  • Lakes School, Windermere
  • Millom School, Millom
  • St Bernard’s School, Barrow in Furness
  • Richard Rose Central Academy, Carlisle
