Preparing for the big PSTN Switch Off 2025

2025 will see the biggest change in telecoms history for the past 30 years, following the announcement from BT that they are beginning to implement plans to switch off the Public Switch Telephone Network (PSTN) and Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN).

The use of modern internet protocol (IP) networks has vastly taken over communication channels, being able to support both broadband and landline telephone services.  The PSTN and ISDN limitations, including both cost and maintenance requirements, are key factors in the movement of communications to an entirely online space. Businesses will no longer be able to acquire ISDN and PSTN from October 2023, ready for the changes to be fully implemented in 2025.

Any technology change can be daunting for a business, especially those who are comfortable working with their current systems in place.  It is, however, important to consider the benefits these changes will have on your business, such as users experiencing much clearer phone calls at a cheaper rate than that of PSTN and ISDN.

Businesses will also be able to save costs in reducing their line rental, as fewer physical lines will be needed to connect.  Those who need additional lines, will find the provision of new lines much quicker than that of PSTN and ISDN.  Finally, the new systems will work hand in hand with the shift that has been seen in flexible working, providing a more scalable system that can easily transfer calls across locations, connect to the office line from anywhere in the country and see which team members are available to take calls.

The transition to online systems may see businesses requiring additional support to prepare their current set up for the shift.
