Anand Puthran
What is his connection to Cumbria?

Anand had previously worked as general manager of the Workington site when it was owned by ABB and had always thought the Workington operations had significant development potential as a stand-alone entity. Anand took great pride in returning to Cumbria to acquire this world-class facility that supplies differential pressure flow measurement and temperature measurement products.

And Cumbria is now where his family calls home.

Why join the Chamber’s board of directors?

In a hyper-competitive world led by technological innovations, Cumbrian businesses need to be represented by forward looking organisations with an entrepreneurial mindset. Cumbria Chamber’s enterprising business model in supporting businesses in the region was a welcomed change in comparison to most other membership organisations and led Anand to believe that he could add good value as a member of the board.

His entrepreneurial attitude, passionate promotion of UK manufacturing and leadership style that is intentionally inclusive are the key strengths which he felt would benefit the community through being involved with the Chamber.

What is his standout/best quality when working?

Anand believes leaders should train their minds to respond not react. There is uncertainty in any business and the conviction of a leader when communicated effectively calms and brings a sense of certainty and confidence in the team. And he hopes that he brings that, along with an empowering culture, that allows passionate colleagues to be the best they can be.

Anand thinks leadership should be about the wellbeing and achievements of the team; that becomes your success.

What is his biggest career highlight to date?

Persuading multinational ABB to sell a business division that wasn’t for sale to start-up company McMenon. It took initiative, courage and a huge amount of time and effort to see it through, over about 17 months.

Anand still feels the same excitement and passion when talking about the experience of making my first acquisition, which is a world-class business from a world-leading organisation.

A fun fact

Anand nearly started a career as a police officer after the principles of leadership and supporting others were instilled in him from a very young age by his father mostly by sharing ancestral stories.
