Could you become a Disability Confident Leader?

Here at Cumbria Chamber of Commerce we’re delighted to have been awarded Disability Confident Leader status, stepping up to this third level from our previous commitment as a Disability Confident Employer.

Our Leader status, which is externally validated, demonstrates our active commitment as a champion of the Disability Confident scheme and to ensuring equality of opportunity for people with disabilities and long-term health conditions.

This isn’t just about altruism or “doing the right thing”, crucially it’s about encouraging employers to consider and benefit from the full range of talents available.

The Leader assessment didn’t just look at what we do in our own business, it included what we do to actively encourage and support other businesses to become Disability Confident. As part of this we had to evidence activities we undertake to get, keep and develop the right people for our business, regardless of any disabilities or long-term heath conditions, and what we do to promote the opportunities to other businesses.

This is a journey not a destination. So as a next step we’ve signed up with Disability Connect to access support and mentoring. Initially we’re using this to help us ensure that our services are genuinely accessible and attractive and to further review and improve our recruitment processes.
