A hybrid way of working

Your business may have introduced a temporary flexible working policy over the Covid period. For some employees, this has been welcomed, for example because it’s enabled home schooling, protection from the virus and savings in travel time and costs. Similarly many businesses have identified benefits. But it hasn’t all be plain sailing for either businesses or staff!

As we emerge for what should be the last time out of lockdown, many businesses are thinking about working structures going forward. Some large organisations, such as Natwest, IBM and BP, have already announced they will adapt to a new hybrid work model, with staff asked to work from home for the majority of the week.

We spoke to Claire Harrison, Head of People at Burnetts about how their business adapted to remote working soon after the pandemic hit last March. They have over 140 staff over the 4 branches in Carlisle, Penrith, Cockermouth and Newcastle.

Claire said: “We were in the fortunate position of being already ‘teched up’ as a firm. This meant we could still maintain our high level of client service whilst our staff worked remotely.” Claire explained that the firm are committed to offering a hybrid working policy moving forward.

Like many businesses, Burnetts are keen to continue the positive collaborative working culture they’ve built. “We are embracing a flexible working arrangement but it’s just how we establish the essence of our company whilst doing so.

“There’ll be a period of consolidation and consultation with all employees to see what arrangement suits them. It’s about striking the right balance.”

Hybrid workforces will require a shift in management approaches to ensure that teams are productive. If you’re challenged with leading teams remotely, join the Chamber for a free members’ webinar that will explore what’s needed in leadership in this context. The webinar will be held on Thursday 22nd April at 9.30-10.30am. You can out more about the session here.

The session will also introduce further training on the same topic over 3 session. You can find out about the training here.
