Tackling Staff Misconduct – Prevention and Cure
Misconduct ranges from fighting, stealing and harassment at one extreme to low-level bickering and general awkwardness at the other. Sanctions run from an informal warning to the ”nuclear option” of instant dismissal for gross misconduct.
Handling such issues promptly and effectively sends a strong message to your staff about the ethos of the organisation but also limits the scope for expensive, time-consuming and distracting internal disputes and Employment Tribunal claims.
As well as giving you useful template letters and checklists, this training will show how simple and practical employment law techniques can be used to tackle misconduct by covering:
- How employment law operates and why the law puts managers in control;
- Practical tips on how to reduce the chance of misconduct in the first place;
- Clear guidance on carrying out an investigation, disciplinary meeting, dismissal and appeal efficiently, fairly and lawfully;
- Alternative solutions – mediations, “off the record” discussions/settlement agreements;
- Case studies setting out “real life” common problems and how to address them.
In essence, the training will show you how to get tackle misconduct with the minimum of risk, hassle and cost.

Michael Bauer is a 20 year qualified employment solicitor who after working in London and Manchester has for the last 10 years run Cumbria Employment Solicitors – a specialist law firm dealing with all aspects of employment law. In addition to his work as a solicitor, Michael was an Employment Judge for the last 5 years.
